As US income has become more concentrated, it is not surprising that donations have become even more so. The average household is having a hard enough time paying for gas, the mortgage and food. Who has money for the latest museum capital fund raising project? It is hard to feel sorry for all the public radio stations falling all over each other in their efforts to extract pledges from listeners. How many NPR stations does the San Francisco area need? And if they shut down between midnight and 5 am to save money (as some did years ago), would it be the end of the world? I hardly think so.

It really is a Great Unraveling, of global scale. This can really be traced all the way back to the 1970's. The global controllers have been selling too much fear and not enough love. Peace!

The era of freebies is drawing to a close. We are reverting to a swim or sink society. I think when this economy really tanks many will go down with the ship.
Folks, there will be no one around to throw you a lifeline so learn to assumme personal responsability for yourselves

Thank you.

My brother works for a large corporation. Wanting to do something good for the community, they planned to organize a canned food drive. This would have brought in THOUSANDS of canned goods. Would you believe that they had trouble finding anyone who wanted the food? Some charities only wanted money. Others would accept some foods, but not others. One agency demanded an accurate account of every type of canned good that was to be donated. One would accept the food, but only if someone delivered it. I myself still have two large boxes of perfectly good canned goods, pasta, sauces, crackers, etc. that I would love to deliver to a food bank, but I can't find one that takes small donations. I'd pass out food to the homeless on the street before I'd ever deal with a food charity again.

This may be a bad time to badmouth any charity organization, but I have never forgiven nor forgotten the United Way scandals of years past--the chief one being administrative overhead costs and administrative excesses

My main recollections of United Way are of their putting the squeeze on lower-level clerical staff. We were living at the poverty level ourselves. The United Way speaker who came to our organization pointedly avoided answering questions about how the money was allocated. Some of the money, I later learned, was used to build a recreational facility in perhaps the richest suburb of our city.

For many years, I have viewed United Way as a "take from the poor, give to the rich" organization.
