the notion of retiring at the age of 65 or thereabouts is a fairly recent phenomenon.and so is the longevity not so long ago only lucky people
lived to be that old.
Retirement:much is said about it by people who have no idea
what it means, they romanticize (like the golden age)in Europe
it's called the 3rd. age, much more appropriate. Now if you have
been a wise & sage person you need very little to live a productive &
happy life' The 2 most important things you need is a reasonably good
health & a roof over your head, don't vegetate over a stupid TV
eat good food have a glass of good wine, keep your brain busy
and accept with good grace your mortality.

"25% said they have prematurely withdrawn funds from their retirement accounts"

What! This leaves me speechless - what happens if times get worse?
How much of the already cliff-diving government tax receipts originated from that??

Think of it as pay back time for all those foolish Americans who voted for Bush, twice, because he supported a Federal marriage amendment. The US will be paying for the mistakes of the Bush administration, including but not limited to the war in Iraq, for decades to come. Many Baby Boomers face a grim future as they get old. In the meantime, the House passed a $106 billion funding bill yesterday for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Can't we just declare victory and get out before this country goes bankrupt?

Yes indeed, NO sympathy from me (and I am one of that generation). Why? because my peers for far too long voted for lying, hypocritical smucks & were overly materialistic themselves. That's a toxic combination.

You get what you sow.

WKPD:- The basic state pension... was introduced in the [UK] in January 1909. ... following the passage of the Old Age Pensions Act 1908. The qualifying age was 70, and the pensions were subject to a means test.

I suppose the means test may return for us - and for you too?

Doesn't everyone see the catastrophic implications of what is happening?
Retirement is going to be a part of history, an anomaly, unless we as a society stop misallocating resources and try to focus on improving the human condition for EVERYONE and not just those that can pay for it.
Capitalism has proven a huge failure that caters to human greed and avarice at the expense of the environment and the majority of the planets population. At the level of technological advancement that exits there is absolutely no reason for the mind bending inequality in the world.
Furthermore most wealthy people didn't achieve the wealth through creating anything but rather by grabbing as much as they could by any means possible with no regard to morals or fairness. What a great system capitalism.
