Social Security is expected to run a cash deficit during the current fiscal year and the next one. More people are out of work and not paying FICA. If you are 62 years old and you have run out of unemployment benefits, signing up for Social Security benefits is a good alternative. When will Congress have the nerve to pull our troops out of Korea, Germany and Japan? We can't afford to be the policeman of the world any more.

In the ultimate case of desperation humans are
capable of cannibalism, the unthinkable becomes
doable.Walking away from rotten mortgages is now
fairly common.When a nation can no longer honor its
debt obligation it will do the same.When survival mode
kicks in,the thin veneer "make that varnish" of what
we bombastically call civilization just evaporates in
tin air. The people will endure,the system will not.

Please consider the % of current government expenditures that are borrowed rather than debt as a % of GDP...

Druken sailors spend so much because they have saved up money during their long periods at sea. If and only if we could get our government to save money for any long period.

That said, the light at the end of the tunnel (our country's future) will eventually have to get turned off due to budget cuts. Our country won't be able to afford the bill.
