I think that people really did try very, very hard to pay down the credit card debt. Some people also had to run up their cards in order to live, because they no longer have an income.

So I would argue that larger trends mask several different behavior populations that are doing different things. One group defaulted outright. One group is running up the cards to survive (though this group is probably small, because it had its credit cut). One group is eating ramen noodles two meals a day and keeping the heat turned off to pay down its debt, given that the interest rate is 30% on that debt. No one feels rich.
